This month we got the chance to interview Sydney Cyr, one of our dedicated Speech Pathologists based in Cairns. With a passion for helping others, Sydney brings her expertise to guiding her clients and their families through their individual journeys toward improved communication and independence.
When asked about what Sydney loves most about her role she responded, “I love the diversity of clients I see daily. I get to work on so many different goals and build connections with so many wonderful participants and their families. It is a joy to watch them grow over time and achieve their goals.”
A Typical Day in Sydney’s Role
Sydney’s day begins with a coffee, setting the tone for a busy and fulfilling schedule. Sydney spends her time visiting participants at home or in the community, travelling to meet them where it’s most beneficial to work on their goals.
In the afternoon, she may spend some time conducting telehealth sessions and work closely with family members, coaching and teaching them new skills to support their loved ones with communication challenges.
Collaboration and Teamwork
Sydney’s commitment to collaboration is evident as she joins multidisciplinary team meetings whenever possible, ensuring that everyone involved in her clients’ lives is working together to achieve the best outcomes. When not working directly with clients, Sydney is busy gathering resources, creating home practice activities, taking training to upskill herself, or writing reports to support her clients in securing the funding they need.
Making a Difference in People’s Lives
When asked to recall a time she helped make a difference in someone’s life, Sydney shared that helping clients find their unique voice and the confidence to use it is the most rewarding and inspiring aspect of her role.
Supporting children and families to understand and use augmentative and alternative forms of communication (AAC) is incredibly powerful and can have such an immense impact in helping people find a way to say what they are thinking. Through her work, she has seen clients go from minimal speaking to using an AAC device to request games, express emotions, or ask for help.
Sydney quotes, “communication is such a powerful tool and ingrained in everything we do, so giving those individuals and their families a way to understand each other is a truly wonderful experience for all those involved.”
Continuous Learning and Growth
Sydney’s journey into the field of speech pathology has been marked by her dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of her clients. Her days are filled with diverse activities, all aimed at providing the best support for her clients.
Sydney’s commitment to continuous learning and collaboration ensures that her clients receive comprehensive care, and her most rewarding moments come from empowering clients to find their voice and fostering meaningful connections through communication.
