More than 4.4 million people in Australia live with disability and are at substantial risk of adverse health outcomes if they become infected with Coronavirus (COVID-19). Many have a compromised immune system and multiple underlying health conditions but rely on close contact with carers and support workers to manage self-care and daily living. During the pandemic, there is also a higher risk of people with disability experiencing abuse (being mistreated), neglect (not getting the help they need) and exploitation (being taken advantage of).
New guidelines for healthcare and disability providers
To mitigate this risk, the Australian Government has developed a Coronavirus (COVID-19) Management and Operational Plan for People with Disability, which includes specific guidelines for healthcare and disability service providers in relation to clinical, public health and communication actions. These important additional safeguards support ongoing access to services, equipment and information in a way that minimises the risk of harm during the pandemic.
Changes for NDIS participants
For NDIS participants, service delivery methods and types of support available have changed, including:
- Reduced face-to-face meetings
- Options to extend plans for 24 months
- More flexible budget arrangements, with choices to move money from capacity building to core supports
- Extra help with daily living, such as support with grocery shopping
