Everyone communicates in their own way. Sometimes, when life feels overwhelming, that communication can show up as behaviours that are distressing, confusing or hard to manage – for the person themselves and for the people around them. This is where Positive Behaviour Support, or PBS, can help.

Positive Behaviour Support is a gentle, evidence-based approach that focuses on understanding the why behind behaviours, rather than trying to ‘fix’ or stop them. It recognises that behaviour is often a response to unmet needs, big emotions, sensory overload, changes in routine or difficulty communicating. Most importantly, PBS is built on respect, dignity and compassion.

At its heart, PBS is about helping people feel safe, understood and supported in their everyday lives.

What does Positive Behaviour Support involve?

Positive Behaviour Support looks at the whole person and their environment. This might include daily routines, communication styles, sensory needs, relationships and what’s happening around them at home, school or in the community.

A PBS practitioner works alongside the participant and their support network to identify what is triggering distress and what helps. Together, they create practical strategies that reduce the need for challenging behaviours and build skills, confidence and independence over time.

There’s no judgement and no blame – just curiosity, care and a focus on what will make life feel easier.

How LiveBig supports participants with PBS

At LiveBig, we understand that reaching out for behaviour support can feel daunting. Please know this – you’re not doing anything wrong, and you don’t have to have all the answers. We’ve got you.

Our experienced clinicians take the time to truly listen and get to know each participant as an individual. We work at your pace, using clear language and simple, practical strategies that fit into real life – not just paperwork.

We collaborate closely with families, carers, support workers, schools and other providers to make sure everyone feels confident and supported. Where required, we can also develop NDIS-compliant Behaviour Support Plans that focus on safety, wellbeing and quality of life.

Above all, we put the needs of our clients first and we do it in a way that is kind, respectful and hopeful. Positive change is possible, and small steps can make a big difference.

If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed or just need someone to talk things through with, LiveBig is here to support you every step of the way.
