Speech pathology is about helping people communicate in ways that work for them. Sometimes that means developing speech and language skills. Other times it means introducing new communication tools, supporting families, or building confidence so people can participate more fully in everyday life.

We asked several Speech Pathologists from the LiveBig team to share some examples of a memorable impact they have had on the lives of their clients during their careers.

Adrian: Supporting Greater Independence Through AAC

Adrian worked with a client who had very limited ways to communicate their day-to-day needs.

Together, they introduced an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system, and Adrian worked with the client’s support team to ensure it became part of everyday routines.

The result was a significant milestone: the client independently communicated a request for the first time.

“It might sound like a small achievement, but it represented a major step towards independence. It also gave the people around them a clearer way to understand and respond to their needs.”

Kirushna: Building Confidence Beyond the Therapy Room

Kirushna supported a parent who was experiencing significant self-doubt while navigating their child’s communication challenges.

While working towards the child’s goals, Kirushna recognised the importance of supporting the parent as well. Through regular conversations, encouragement and practical strategies, the parent became more confident and engaged in the therapy process.

Over time, that confidence translated into more consistent support at home and strong progress in the child’s communication development.

“This experience reinforced that supporting families is often just as important as supporting the client. When caregivers feel informed and confident, they’re better equipped to help their child succeed.”

Joe: Equipping Families with Long-Term Strategies

During a student placement, Joe worked with a young child whose family had limited access to ongoing therapy.

Knowing their time together was limited, Joe focused on developing tailored resources the family could continue to use independently.

The goal was not just progress during therapy sessions, but providing practical tools that would support communication development beyond the end of intervention.

“I knew our sessions were only one part of the journey. I wanted the family to leave with resources and strategies they could continue using long after therapy finished.”

Josie: Creating New Opportunities for Communication

Josie supported two non-speaking siblings who had never previously accessed speech pathology or used a formal communication system.

Following AAC trials and implementation, both were able to communicate their needs and preferences more effectively.

Seeing how quickly they adopted the system highlighted the impact that access to appropriate communication supports can have.

“Watching them use the system to express themselves was incredibly rewarding. It opened up new opportunities for communication and participation in everyday life.”

Communication Opens Doors

These stories reflect the broad role speech pathologists play in supporting communication, participation and independence.

Whether it’s introducing AAC, developing communication skills, supporting families or providing practical strategies, speech pathology can help people engage more confidently at home, school, work and in their communities.
