LiveBig will host a free national webinar later this month to help carers, support workers and disability sector professionals build safer, more trauma-informed environments for the people they support. As a national NDIS registered provider of allied health and behaviour support services, LiveBig works with children and adults across Australia to strengthen wellbeing, independence and everyday participation.
The online session, The Power of Safety: Addressing Trauma in Disability Caregiving, will be held on Thursday 27 November from 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm AEDT. Presented by Irene Ejones, Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner and Team Leader at LiveBig, the webinar will explore how trauma shapes emotional regulation, behaviour and daily interactions, and what carers can do to respond in ways that are calm, supportive and effective.
Many people with disability have experienced trauma that is not always visible. This can influence how they communicate, how they cope with stress and how they respond to changes or demand. Without the right understanding, behaviours can be misinterpreted or managed in ways that increase distress. The webinar aims to give carers simple, practical tools that promote safety, consistency and trust.
“Understanding trauma helps carers and support teams respond with empathy rather than frustration,” says Melanie Gallagher, Manager of Positive Behaviour Support at LiveBig. “When we recognise what a person may be carrying, we can create environments that feel safer, reduce escalation and strengthen the person’s sense of control. The more confident carers feel, the better the person is supported.”
Topics covered include:
- How trauma impacts people with disability
- How to view behaviours through a trauma-informed lens
- How to develop signals of safety and effective safety plans
- Practical ways to respond to distress or challenging behaviours
Designed for family members, frontline staff, support workers and providers across the disability sector. The session offers guidance that can be applied immediately in homes, workplaces and community settings.
