Every day in Australia, 38 people hear the life-changing words: “You have Parkinson’s.” That’s more than one person every hour; a reminder of just how prevalent and complex this condition is. April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and April 11 marks World Parkinson’s Day, a time to raise awareness, break down stigma, and highlight the support that can improve quality of life for those living with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive and degenerative condition of the central nervous system. It affects more people over 50 than many common cancers, but it also affects younger people, with five Australians under 40 diagnosed every single day. Despite its prevalence, Parkinson’s is still widely misunderstood, often misdiagnosed, and too often viewed only through the lens of visible symptoms such as tremors or stiffness.

What many don’t see are the non-motor symptoms, which can range from sleep disturbances and mood changes to cognitive issues and fatigue. These invisible symptoms often have an even greater impact on daily life, relationships, and emotional wellbeing than the more obvious motor symptoms.

At LiveBig, our team of allied health professionals, including Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists, play a crucial role in helping individuals with Parkinson’s live more independently and safely. Our approach is person-centred, recognising that no two people experience Parkinson’s the same way, and that treatment must be just as unique.

Physiotherapy can help manage many of the physical symptoms associated with Parkinson’s. This includes improving mobility, posture, flexibility, and balance, which in turn helps reduce the risk of falls and promotes greater independence. Structured, regular exercise, guided by a physiotherapist, has also been shown to slow the progression of motor symptoms and maintain functional ability for longer. Physiotherapists can also address issues like freezing, walking difficulties, and pain management.

Occupational Therapy, on the other hand, focuses on supporting individuals with the skills and strategies they need for everyday tasks. Occupational Therapists work closely with clients to modify tasks or environments, introduce assistive technology, and build routines that help maintain independence and quality of life. They also help manage non-motor symptoms, including fatigue and cognitive changes, by developing strategies tailored to each person’s lifestyle and goals.

Working together, our multidisciplinary team at LiveBig provides wrap-around support that goes far beyond treating symptoms. We help clients with Parkinson’s stay engaged in their communities, remain active in their homes, and live with purpose.

On World Parkinson’s Day, we stand with everyone affected by this condition, not just to raise awareness, but to provide support that makes a real difference.
